Stephen Roddy

I am a Researcher, Lecturer, and Musical/Sound Artist based at the Radical Humanities Lab and the Department of Digital Humanities at University College Cork. My work spans and integrates both computing and the creative arts with a focus on sound and music. I hold a Ph.D. in data sonification: the use of sound to perceptualize data and convey information. My research is focused on the application of sonification, auditory display, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), internet of things (IoT), and human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques in the creative arts and beyond, from the perspectives of cybernetics and embodied cognitive science.

Previous projects have explored the design of auditory display solutions for large-scale IoT networks and investigated the integration of sonification and AI/ML techniques in generative music and sound art applications. This work was carried out under an IRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at CONNECT: the SFI Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications, at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), and subsequently at the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering also at TCD. My work is widely disseminated through peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters, and conference proceedings.

I maintain a vibrant and diverse creative arts practice spanning a variety of media and styles including music composition and performance, sound art installation, interactive art, and music for dance and stage. My work has been described as eclectic, and experimental. It is frequently performed and installed at home and abroad. Previous events have included the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, IMMA’s Eco Rising Festival, and the Helicotrema Recorded Audio Festival in Venice.
