Curators’ word – Isil Ezgi Celik

What are images for? What do they tell us? Are they representations of the world, or are they a world themselves? Where does visual art stand today in the Reign of Images? Is everything art today, or has art withdrawn from the earth?

With the communication revolution brought about by the invention of the digital apparatus, the way humans think and orient themselves in the world has changed drastically, and so has art. The apparatus functions as an intelligent machine, as Flusser puts it, and submits the artist to its structural limits, putting creative freedom in question more than ever. How does an artist resist the power of the apparatus? Are we witnessing the birth of an immaterial art or art that the apparatus has subjugated?

This exhibition brings together a selection of works by local artists who work with digital apparatus to visually explore the meaning and power of images today.
